Discussion:
1960 Towmotor info

Hi,

I just acquired a 1960 Towmotor that runs fine other than needing the brakes re-done. There is no plate or tag on the forklift. How can I find info on changing the brake pad(s) if I don't have the plate info?

Thanks,
Neil

At one point in time Towmotor stamped the serial number into the front frame crossmember plate up near the top. With the serial number any Cat forklift dealer can tell you the model number and capacity range. If you need to replace the master cylinder, the master cylinder casting should identify who Towmotor was purchasing the cylinder from. The manufacturer name should be cast into the side of the cylinder along with a number. Two common suppliers were Wagner and Bendix. Take the cylinder to your Cat forklift dealer or any good parts store and they should be able to find a cylinder that will work. You may have to adapt some fittings.

The motor is a 4 cylinder. Don't know what the capacity is the tag is missing. In any event I don't think the shoe(s) need replacing. When I pump the brake pedal they become hard and brake fluid is leaking out from underneath. I'll have a look after the rain stops and see where it is leaking from. If it is just a line or the master cylinder then that's easy enough to fix.

I found a date 3/1963 stamped on the top of the engine.

Does anyone have any idea what models where available in 1963 from Towmotor. A link to a picture would also be helpful.
