What does it mean to be sustainable?

Sustainability. A powerful word with wide-reaching implications that represents more than just a trend. Sustainability is a responsibility and a value that not only we aspire to embody ourselves, but one we increasingly expect from others. The more sustainable our choices—whether in consumption or innovation—the stronger and more resilient our businesses become. In short, sustainability drives progress.

As we highlighted in the opening of this newsletter, sustainability is a strong concept shaped by actions, principles, and above all, ethical considerations. But what does it truly mean to be sustainable within the realm of intralogistics? And how do we at Rocla AGV Solutions play our part in advancing sustainability?

Seeking sustainability in intralogistics

Being sustainable in intralogistics involves designing and managing internal logistics systems that are environmentally responsible, economically sound, and socially beneficial over the long term. There are numerous practices organisations can adopt to make their operations more environmentally sustainable.

For example, adopting energy-efficient technologies—such as AGVs and electric vehicles, LED lighting, and smart HVAC systems—can significantly reduce energy consumption while also saving time and costs. Rocla AGVs contribute to lowering carbon emissions by optimising transport routes through the Route Optimizer feature in our FleetController software.

Moreover, the precise and predictable load handling provided by AGVs helps minimise waste by reducing damage to goods and infrastructure. Beyond automation, initiatives such as implementing recycling programmes, cutting down on packaging waste, and using reusable containers further support waste reduction efforts.

Considering other dimensions—such as the economic and social viability of operations, solutions, and resources—is equally vital to achieving true sustainability. Striving for cost-effective operations not only improves financial performance but also helps reduce waste, downtime, and unnecessary movement of goods through more streamlined processes.

Likewise, long-term investments in durable, modular equipment that can be upgraded rather than replaced bring both peace of mind and tangible benefits by cutting unnecessary costs and reducing waste. Technologies like AGVs enhance operational efficiency and lower costs without compromising job quality. Rocla AGV Solutions offer a modular, easily scalable, and long-lasting approach, designed to meet the specific needs of each customer.

To complement all the efforts mentioned above, there is one final, yet essential, piece to the sustainability puzzle. For any process, solution, or resource to remain viable in the long term, it must also promote the well-being of workers and support the local economy. AGVs contribute to this by enhancing workplace safety and ergonomics, taking over repetitive and physically demanding tasks. This allows employees to transition into more skilled and meaningful roles, fostering both personal development and a more resilient workforce.

What are our efforts towards sustainability at Rocla AGV Solutions?

In order to achieve the general benefits automation can bring in terms of sustainability, there are many actions we take, as this is at the core of our company values.

Increase efficiency by reducing unnecessary travel and energy use

Rocla AGVs can adapt to layout changes and varying material flow demands by optimising routes using their advanced FleetController software, which includes two key components: the Order Optimizer and the Route Optimizer.

  1. Order Optimizer: This algorithm determines the most suitable AGV for each task. It continuously updates and refines task allocation to ensure optimal fleet performance and efficient resource use.
  2. Route Optimizer: This component analyses the condition across warehouse aisles in real time and calculates the most efficient, deadlock-free paths for AGVs to follow. It estimates drive times and dynamically adjusts routes to avoid congestion and delays.

When looking at the future of intralogistics, we know that the future is in combining automation with manual operations by letting AGVs support with burdensome tasks. How do we continue to offer optimal routing and material handling when combining these two systems? At Rocla AGV Solutions, we have made technology previously only available to AGVs also available for manual operations.

Thanks to our FleetController software, Automated Material Flow Control (AMFC), and ForkLift Orders (FLO) App, which facilitate seamless collaboration between AGVs and driver-operated forklifts, we can ensure optimal efficiency and coordination and allow managers to monitor and control their operations from one single point.

Moreover, advanced navigation systems, sensor technologies, collision avoidance systems and compliance with the ISO 3691-4 safety standard, enable Rocla AGVs to adapt to sudden changes in layouts and tasks, reducing the risk of collisions and ensuring safe interactions between AGVs and human workers.

POSTNORD TPL: Meeting the sustainability targets with automated waste management

Minimise waste through precise load handling

Rocla AGVs are engineered for high-precision load handling, thanks to a combination of advanced hardware and intelligent software systems that help minimise damage to goods and infrastructure. For instance, the high-end navigation sensors allow them to position themselves accurately, ensuring precise alignment with racking systems or conveyors.

On the other hand, our AGV Solutions can be implemented with minimal to no modifications to the existing layout, and they can operate in tight environments without compromising load handling accuracy. The patented integral mast and modular fork systems can handle a variety of load types (e.g., pallets, reels, containers) with minimal deviation or damage.

We design and manufacture in Europe

All our AGVs are designed and manufactured in Finland, at the Järvenpää Design Center for both the European and global markets. Our company employs nearly 600 employees in design and manufacturing in approximately 150 different jobs, significantly impacting Finland’s employment and fostering innovation within the region.

Our products export Finnish cutting-edge technology and expertise to the world, and our efforts to support local production and economy and reduce the carbon footprint associated with long-distance shipping align with sustainability goals and regulations.

We highlight our commitment to sustainability through durable, repairable, and thoughtfully crafted products. Designing and producing in Europe also ensures compliance with EU regulations and standards, such as the ISO 3691-4 safety standards, and allows for superior oversight and quality control of our products.

All our vehicles carry the Design From Finland and the Key Flag (Avainlippu) labels, which reflect reliability, high quality, responsibility, honesty, employability, sustainability, and a value choice. Products or services flagged with these logos promote and support European and Finnish work, employment, and work culture, making them also ethical, ecological, and responsible choices.

Enable circular logistics with Life Cycle Services

Considering the environmental impact of products and systems from design through disposal, we aim to reduce waste also by minimising the need for replacement.

Through our Life Cycle Services, we can extend the lifespan of the AGV Solution and support long-term operational efficiency by carrying out regular maintenance audits that ensure that the vehicles are functional and continue to meet the original requirements.

Identifying and addressing potential failures in the AGV system before they escalate into major issues is key to prompt response to potential threats, which can also prevent costly repairs and replacements.

At Rocla AGV Solutions, we can help you select the service package that best suits your needs. For instance, our Full-service package includes maintenance audit, preventive maintenance, software maintenance, email support, 24/7 AGV Helpdesk support, spare parts, and work on unexpected failures.

Being sustainable means designing, creating, and operating these systems in ways that minimise environmental impact, optimise resource use, and support long-term operational efficiency.

This year, our efforts towards more sustainable intralogistics have been recognised with another EcoVadis Sustainability Rating, achieving a perfect score of 100/100 thanks to our ISO 45001 certification in one of the subcategories within “environmental impact”. This category analyses companies’ intention to reduce impact, actions to support sustainability policies and commitments, as well as compliance with international standards.

Nevertheless, sustainability is an ongoing commitment, and as such, we remain dedicated to continuously improving and evolving our solutions in pursuit of more sustainable practices.
