Pipe handling safety is not optional. Long loads of round stock are handled by forklifts everywhere on the globe. But when pipe moves on forklifts, it can be an unstable, potentially dangerous load. Handling unsecured loads of long pipe and round stock puts personnel and equipment at risk and can cause damage to expensive pipe.

Cargo handlers in the ports of Houston and Seattle recently began moving drill pipe and casing. They had existing large forklifts without hold-down clamps. Safety is paramount in these fast-moving operations. That's why they turned to Unit Load Handling's WPH-SW and WPH-SW-HD retro-fit pipe clamps. Now, six large forklifts are working at these ports both importing and exporting pipe. Six WPH-SW and SW-HD series clamps were quickly field-installed at the port locations and began biting on pipe in short order.

These two new series' of retro-fit pipe hold down clamps from Unit Load Handling Systems, Inc., of Alvin, Texas, USA allow operators to add a robust pipe clamp to almost any forklift ranging in capacity from 12 tons through 27 tons. These new clamps can be incorporated, without welding or cutting, directly into the existing forklift fork carriage. This can be easily done on-site.

These standardized clamps have a pipe diameter range of 70 mm to 915 mm. Both clamp series, the WPH-SW (12 ton to 16 ton range at 600 mm load center) and its big brother, WPH-SW-HD (16 Ton to 27 ton range at 1200 mm load center) work with 2,4 meter forks. Once installed on the forklift, the clamps do not decrease the usable fork length.

They operate from just one hydraulic supply function from the forklift, just two hoses. A convenient termination point on the clamp frame makes connection simple and pain free. Additionally, a two-function option is also available to allow independent operation of the primary (top) and secondary arm.

The WPH-SW and WPH-SW-HD both allow the forklift's separate sideshift function to remain operable, an important tool for efficiency when loading out trailers or railcars or loading onto storage bunks or conveyors.

These attachments ship domestically fully assembled, complete with all plumbing and on-board control valves installed. In the case of extreme dimensions, or overseas-shipping size constraints, they can be shipped in knock-down packages to be easily reassembled at installation.

Rubber padding vulcanized onto aluminium can be bolted to the clamp's load contact plate for protection of coated pipe. This durable, replaceable surfacing can also assist load retention in wet, snowy and icy conditions.
