In the automotive industry, lighting has long been an important part of the vehicle design, safety and brand. Today, this is becoming increasingly seen in work vehicles too. However, knowledge is generally quite low about what makes good lighting on heavy vehicles, a knowledge gap that can be costly, in several ways. Industry leading work lighting company, TYRI, is now investing in a digital academy to increase the industry's knowledge of light and lighting.

Quality of light - not just lumens and price

Choosing the right work lighting is not always easy, says Christian Wadell, who is responsible for TYRI's research and development department. Too many people base their buying decisions for work lights on brightness and price. However, it is also important to take into account both product quality and light quality. It is important to create as even a lighting as possible, without the risk of glare and with a colour temperature that is more similar to the sun's light. It makes the driver feel safer and can work without getting tired in the same way. In addition, it is important to choose products that withstand the stresses that work machines put on them. This minimizes downtime and service costs.

Design and intelligence - hot trends in work lighting

During November 2020, TYRI conducted a large number of webinars around the world. Christian Wadell highlights the six most important trends he sees today in work lighting:
  • Self-propelled and electric vehicles - what this means for the industry
  • Warning light - already a big issue linked to safety
  • Quality products & light quality - the importance of the right products and the right work light
  • Design as a strategic tool - for manufacturers who want to work more with design as a means of competition
  • Intelligent lighting solutions - New technology provides great opportunities to create the right lighting for different situations and different drivers
  • Environment & sustainability - an issue that no one can stand for anymore, how does it affect our industry?

- We have always been on the forefront of advances in work lighting with new technology and new solutions, says Christian. Today we have several unique concepts that connect to what we have been predicting. We have developed a series of work lamps that have a very high CRI (Color Rendering Index), with a light that is much more reminiscent of sunlight, but with all the advantages that LED has to offer.

- Our world-unique concept INTELLilight has also been launched and we have started delivering this to several large manufacturers of work vehicles. In short, it is an intelligent LED work light that is part of a wireless system of interconnected lights. Each lamp can change colour temperature to provide as good lighting as possible for different conditions (eg snow, smoke or fog). In addition, each lamp can be dimmed from full power all the way down to zero.

The fact that they are connected in a wireless network means that they can easily be controlled with an app or remote control. They can be simply grouped and regrouped. They can also be adapted for different drivers. As an additional advantage, they are anti-theft, as a lamp taken from the network can not be used elsewhere. The lights can be controlled automatically via a sensor or via the vehicle's own interface. They are also easy to retrofit as they only require a power supply.
