Conventional "governors" will not work in a forklift applications because they simply restrict engine RPM to a certain setpoint level. In most cases this engine RPM setpoint is too low to provide the forklift adequate engine power for heavy lifting required at low speed. Failure to tie engine RPM with vehicle speed makes a conventional governor ineffective in lift truck applications.

SPEED-SAVER devices by KEYTROLLER sense vehicle speed and restrict top speed of a forklift without effecting full engine RPM at low speed or stop. Both cable and electronic models have two top speed setpoints allowing the user to actuate different speeds from external inputs like:
  • Zonetroller: IR speed boundary system (low speed and high speed on either side of IR boundary
  • Height switch: When above switch height on mast, device triggers low speed only
  • Hyd Pressure switch: When calibrated to a weight, device triggers low speed only when weight setpoint is exceeded
  • Different top speed for forward and reverse (low speed in reverse)
  • Key switch on dash: High or low speed turned on/off by supervisor with key
Available in two styles:

SPEED-SAVER SS-701 - CONVENTIONAL CABLE TYPE ACCELERATOR PEDALS:

Kit includes:

  • Gear tooth speed sensor that is to be installed in axle differential to read gear speed
  • Controller with indicator LEDs and adjustment pots
  • Electronic motor actuator "arm"
  • Cable or rod connecting "arm" to throttle lever on engine (includes brackets and connectors - cable is standard)
Features:
  • Controls vehicle top speed WITHOUT effecting engine RPM at low travel speed
  • Therefore the device does NOT effect low speed power necessary for heavy hydraulic
  • lifting operations
  • Designed to work seamlessly with "Tier2" emission systems
  • USB port allows connection to FREE setting software for laptop
How it works:
  • Controls a vehicle's top speed WITHOUT restricting engine RPM at low travel speed
  • When the vehicle reaches idle speed - device's "arm" actuates a cable connected to the engine throttle lever - restricting it's stroke
  • The throttle lever stroke is restricted - which controls top speed by restricting engine RPM
  • When the vehicle speed is reduced below "idle" speed - the "arm" relaxes and the engine throttle again has full stroke (full power) available
Installation:

A "standard" SPEED-SAVER kit comes with mounting brackets and connecting cable with hardware - in some cases, these brackets must be modified to fit a particular forklift. Some units, however can be ordered expressly for the model forklift you will be installing it on. This way, the brackets and hardware are designed for that exact forklift and little, if any, modifications must be made - making installation easier for the mechanics. Idle setpoint (about 2 MPH) then the actuator arm relaxes no longer restriction the throttle stroke and the driver again has full engine RPM without restriction whatsoever.

SPEED-SAVER SSEL-701 - NEW STYLE ELECTRONIC ACCELERATOR PEDALS:

Functions:

A. Top Speed Control with 2 Top Speed Settings:

Designed specifically for forklift trucks, and incorporating proportional control, making it ideal for climbing inclines. Suitable for electronic throttle 'Drive By Wire' Tier 4 engine trucks, and can easily be adapted for conventional cable-throttle vehicles. Monitors road speed and applies engine throttle restriction as required to obtain the correct speed. As the truck slows down, the engine speed limit is removed to allow full power to the hydraulics. The unit can be programmed with two separate speeds and each speed setting can be triggered by various inputs like:
  1. Hydraulic weight sensor (whenever load weighs more than "setpoint" then low speed is triggered
  2. ZONETROLLER IR or Loop zone boundary sensor - vehicle crosses boundary, one way high - other way low speed
  3. Directional control (lower speed in reverse than in forward)
  4. Key switch on dash where high and low speed is turned on/off by supervisor
  5. Limit switch on the mast, above which low speed is actuated, below which vehicle has high speed
  6. KEYSHOCK - Impact sensing module actuates low speed until reset by a supervisor with a key
B. TIRE-SAVER - now standard:

This prevents the driver abusing the truck by changing direction while still in motion, or selecting drive with high engine speed. The programmer sets vehicle speed and engine RPM setpoints in the device via free Windows software via a PC. If the operator changes direction and either the vehicle speed or engine RPM is above the setpoints - then the directional change DOES NOT take place. This forces the operator to apply the breaks to slow the machine and reduce engine RPM. When these setpoints are reached - directional change takes place. The use of the TIRE-SAVER option leads to a considerable decrease in tire wear and increase in tire life (depending on application and driver habits this feature can improve tire life by up to 400%). Besides reducing tire wear, the TIRE-SAVER protects the drive train/transmission from operator abuse by preventing drive unless the road speed and engine revs are below the pre-set limits. With the addition of an inching pedal switch, the clutch pack can also be protected from excessive wear in the same way.

C. Idle shutdown - now standard.

When enabled, this automatically shuts down the engine if the truck is not being used. The length of time a truck can stand idle is adjustable to any value in seconds. Helps to reduce fuel or battery usage, and engine wear caused by excessive idle time, reducing service hours and preventing over-servicing.

D. First gear take off - now standard.

When enabled, this automatically shifts the trucks transmission into 1st gear when the vehicle speed is below a speed threshold setpoint. With this option enabled, this means that a driver can not take off in 2nd or 3rd gear and damage the transmission.

FREE PC laptop software! A technician connects his laptop into the SSEL-701 device via a USB connection. Using the SPEED SAVER software the technician sets one or two top speed settings and switchpoints. If activating the TIRE-SAVER option, he also sets the speed and engine RPM setpoints above which the directional change will NOT take place.
