Thank goodness that’s over!
  • News Story - 31 Dec 2009
By anyone's standards, 2009 was a tough year in global business, and the materials handling sector was not immune. Melissa Barnett reports that many of the grim financial predictions for the year came to pass, and by the end of the year's first financial quarter, the mild-sounding "credit crunch" of 2008 had turned into a full-blown "global financial crisis". The US-based Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) predicted in January an 18% - 20% decline in new equipment orders for 2009. This forecast turned out to be extremely optimistic, with a revised MHIA report published in October showing in fact a decline of 44.9% in just the first half of 2009. MHIA expected the drop to steady over the remainder of the year to hold the total year decline at 35% to 38%. The North American conditions were echoed around the globe, with a general drop of around 40% in new sales recorded by most of the large European and Asian manufacturers and dealers. Forkliftaction.com News recently reported that the recession had to date cost the UK forklift industry GBP344 million (USD 559.5 million) in lost profit. Many companies weathered the financial storm by closing manufacturing facilities or by reducing staff.

Omega lift delivers 30,000 lbs. HERC Series forklift to Lihir Gold in Papua New Guinea
  • Advertisement - 24 Dec 2009
Omega Lift recently delivered one of its 30,000 capacity, 4-wheel drive HERC Series forklifts to Lihir Gold's open pit gold mining operation in Papua New Guinea. Omega Lift was sourced from Lihir Gold because of its expertise building heavy duty forklifts designed for mining applications, as well as their global support network. "Omega Lift has worked extremely hard over he last number of years to develop a truly global product range that can be supported anywhere in the world", explains Nick Acocella, Omega Lift's Director of International Sales & Marketing. "The HERC Series provides 4-wheel drive, and full Rough Terrain certification which is very unique for a forklift of this heavy capacity. Obviously, there are many manufacturers that build heavy trucks, but the Rough Terrain certification and 4-wheel drive really set us apart."
High Performance Solid Tyres from 'Royal'
  • Advertisement - 24 Dec 2009
When a major European roll-trailer manufacturer fitted their 140 ton port trailer with world's leading brand of solid tyres, they faced a rather unusual problem: the trailer did not move! Even after a higher capacity hauler was called in, the trailer moved only after over-heating the hydraulic axle gear-box. It was then that the manufacturer chose 'Royal' tyres for the same application and found them to give superior performance - surpassing ETRTO's recommended load carrying capacity by at least 25%. For Royal Tyres, it was just another day at work: performances are routinely exceeded here.
