Konecranes Lifttrucks AB has delivered what it claims is the world's largest reach stacker to CTB Group's new barge terminal in Liege, Belgium.

The SMV 4545 TB3 has a 9-metre (29.5-foot) wheel base, is 15 metres (49.2 feet) long and 4.6 metres (15.1 feet) wide, weighs 110 tons (111.8 tonnes) and lifts 30 tons (30.5 tonnes) in the third barge row at negative lifting height (2.3 metres/7.5 feet below ground level).

Sales director Mikael Andersson says the reach stacker is used for barge, yard container, rail car and road truck handling.

"Therefore, it is called 'trimodal' - road, rail and water.

"Besides containers, it can also load bulk cargo like coils, slabs, billets, machinery and pumps, and flat racks using four slings positioned in each corner of the spreader."

CTB's machine will be the sixth unit of its size delivered by Konecranes Lifttrucks.

The EUR600,000 (USD834,240) machine was first sold to DUK in Dörpen, Germany in 1996. Andersson says the seventh customer, a German trimodal operator, will receive its reach stacker in December.

The new CTB barge terminal is expected to handle 2,000 TEU a year and is the first phase in CTB's expansion as a barge terminal operator.

The reach stacker will handle general cargo and containers.

According to Konecranes Lifttrucks, CTB plans to open another terminal in three years' time as the barge transportation market is growing rapidly.

"The European Union has decided to promote the use of barge and inland waterway transportation methods instead of traditional trucking as significant environmental benefits can be achieved," Andersson says.

The SMV 4545 TB3's unique features:
  • enormous capacities without support jacks or stabilisers
  • can stack three-deep and three-high in barge mode, 3x3 container density per row
  • longest wheelbase ever at 9 metres (29.5 feet)
  • weight (empty) 105 tons (106.7 tonnes) / with load 150 tons (150.4 tonnes)
  • low-emission Scania 12-litre, 400 hp diesel engine with EU Stage 3 approval
  • camera positioning system in barge mode for single driver operation
  • one machine per driver for three duties (trimodal)
