In the old days of newspapers, they were called "nuggets". They're small news items that are extremely interesting, but uncomplicated and therefore don't need a lot of space. In past times, they were used to fill up columns of type when major stories didn't quite fill the available space. We tend to include these small but interesting items in our "Briefs", and this week is one of the busy times when there are actually a lot of items worthy of inclusion. It may be tempting, when confronted by a list of smaller stories, to skim the first one and go onto something more substantial, but doing that will mean you're missing out. So this week in particular, we'd urge you to seek out the "nuggets".
