Telematics can transform operations within a warehouse, but combining telemetry solutions with cameras adds another level of vigilance.

Not only does the monitoring and data collection of machinery increase efficiency, it also improves safety. These smart solutions have enabled companies to monitor machine usage, understand operator behaviour and identify key safety issues within the workplace. Cameras see and record operations in real time, acting as a safety tool and back up for data provided by telematics.

Cameras for forklifts

There is a multitude of data available to warehouse managers through using telematics.

But the use of additional cameras not only takes away any guessing work when it comes to understanding that data, but they also provide operators with another layer of protection when it comes to machine usage.

Cameras give the full picture.

Having video footage of operations is the last piece of the jigsaw. And having that video evidence gives accurate context to any particular moment in a machine operator's journey.

Premium Safety Management

GemOne’s Sapphire solution is a premium safety management tool for the material handling industry.

It  works with multi-cameras to unleash the potential of tens of thousands of industrial machines across the world. Whether you’re an equipment dealer or the owner of machines, Sapphire and camera usage will increase the safety and efficiency of your fleet today and future-proof your business for tomorrow.

New Camera Functionality

GemOne’s latest Sapphire solution works smoothly with cameras.

The HR cameras (720p) ensure that operators can see clearly, where their vision is normally limited: in high level racking, double-deep racking, low level lighting, and blind spots.

The Sapphire also displays up to 4 camera views. All of which can be viewed on one screen, removing any unwanted dashboard clutter.

Always Recording

Cameras begin recording when a machine is activated and will automatically record video to capture data.

This is potential information that can assist any incident investigation. Footage can be viewed directly from the Sapphire display and is available for up to 33 days.

Blind spots are eliminated with the use of cameras and they remove any guessing work that a machine operator might be left with.

Telematics can tell you what has been done following an event and therefore help to create better work practices for future use, but cameras can highlight in real time (from an operator’s point of view) how to avoid unnecessary collisions in the moment.

Multiple Viewpoints

Recorded video footage can identify any mistakes, errant behaviour and dangerous hotspots.

This footage can be viewed from a multitude of viewpoints: The mast view provides the operator with a clear view of fork depth and views over the load on their blind side. The fork view is installed onto the carriage to assist with viewing of the fork tips. Ideal for high-lift height applications or double-deep racking. A rear view provides an overview of the work area, especially helpful when backing into tight quarters.

The operator can view blind spots with excellent picture quality in low light.

Easy Installation

With GemOne’s installation there is no risk of wear and tear to the machinery either.

The cameras are easily installed on a strong, secure, magnetic base with no welding or drilling required.

Cameras can be repositioned as needed and are suitable for use indoors and outside.

The most important benefit of installing cameras is safety, but other key factors are lower insurance premiums, improved claims procedure, dispelling disputes around any incidents and efficiency improvements.

Cameras also add another layer of protection for operators and companies, as footage will give the full picture where any incidents are concerned. In the event of a collision or accident, relevant information is gathered from the telematics systems, and that data will need to be interpreted, with the addition of cameras the footage is understood instantly and backs up the data already received.

Incident Investigation

A camera system captures any incidents and near-misses and that footage allows managers to see what happened before, during, and just after the incident. This footage can exonerate a machine operator from blame if an incident occurs or it can be used to improve training and working practices where necessary. The help that camera evidence can provide when dealing with insurance claims is an advantage.

Not only do cameras encourage safer driver practices, but they also play an important role with security. Cameras reduce risk of equipment damage. A camera system offers drivers an enhanced view around the outside of their vehicles. The cameras not only reduce the risk of any damage to the vehicle, but also lower the risks of injury to personnel. With strategically- placed cameras companies can assess if their workforce are using best practices in the workplace.

Combining telematics and camera systems clearly has huge benefits - companies that act on the data that is generated through the combined systems will ensure that they and their employees are protected.

Within the busy warehouse environment, cameras are those extra eyes needed to stop accidents before they happen. Having video evidence creates an environment of accountability and protection for anyone involved in an incident.

Improved Operator Training

Training can also be improved with footage of real-life examples of incidents.

Footage can pinpoint where negative work practices have occurred and shows how these practices can be avoided in future. Cameras help workers to be more aware of the main risks, such as people not being seen. Many managers and supervisors may find it hard to keep up with ever-changing standards and legislations and are unsure of where to begin in terms of improving safety. In order for a safety strategy to work, it needs to be clear to everyone who enters the site.

Strategically placed cameras are also useful in the prevention and investigation of work-related injuries. The footage can aid in evaluating if an incident has something to do with operator error. If such is the case, the video will serve as a confirmation that safety training is necessary. Essentially, this will help reduce the risks of occupational hazards.

Having cameras installed alongside telematics data collection, reinforces safety and security. Cameras, like telematics, are a clear indicators to safety officials and employees alike, that employers are making safety a priority within their workplace. Cameras safeguard the company, and employees equally.
