Electric forklifts - financial justification

A wood processing facility in central California switched over to a fleet of 15,000lb - 18,000lb electric forklifts from CARER ELECTRIC FORKLIFT SOLUTIONS.

Carer offers 46 different chassis options between 10,000lbs and 55,000lbs lift capacity. After a detailed application review with their operations manager, the facility realized that by doubling the amount of load they carry per cycle, they could reduce their fleet size and head count by nearly half. This provided ample opportunity for significant operating cost reductions.

The operations manager was very excited about hitting the targets provided to him for reducing his annual operating cost budget. He then proceeded to submit for capital approval to purchase the Carer F70HD2 & F80HD2 models. However, his finance department, who also have budgets for annual capital expenditures, quickly rejected the purchase request. This was due to the fact that the acquisition cost of the electric forklift was significantly more expensive than the internal combustion engine equivalent.

In this case, both the finance and operations departments are doing a great job at trying to hit their budget targets. However, without working together and taking the time to understand the overall cost savings implications on the whole company, they would not otherwise benefit from the electric forklift in the application.

Carer Electric Forklift Solutions brought both departments together to discuss the implications of the solution options and review them in detail.

The customer realized that converting from diesel to electric forklifts will reduce their energy consumption costs by over 88%, maintenance and repairs costs by 40%, tire replacement costs by 65%, while also recovering significant inefficient labor time. In addition, the electric forklift proved to be nearly cash flow positive after only a few months of operation. In other words, the return on investment was seen in less than 3 months.

Another important element to consider is that electric lift trucks are a much better solution for the environment. This is extremely important, as emission standards continue to rise around the world, but especially in ports and intermodal applications.

Unfortunately, there remains a disconnect from operations department and finance departments in many businesses, with each wanting to adhere to their individual department budget targets. This can often lead to less productive solutions being chosen, and in the end the great financial solutions can be over looked.
