DB Schenker's new Madrid facility |
DB Schenker has opened a new logistics centre in Spain. The size of eight football pitches, this is the company's biggest facility of its type to date.
Built at a cost of EUR22 million (USD27.5 million), the centre in Spain's capital, Madrid, will serve as a hub for shipments in the national and international land transport network as well as for air and sea freight. Project logistics consignments will also be handled there.
An office building and two warehouses were erected on a site covering 60,000 sqm. One of the warehouses functions as a cross-decking terminal, and the other is used as a storage facility for air and sea freight.
Climate protection was an important factor in the construction of the facility. For example, a substantial share of the energy demand will be met by an installation consisting of 120 photovoltaic solar panels. All lighting equipment is fitted with LEDs, and the air-conditioning system features VRF (variable refrigerant flow) technology with heat recovery processing.
Some 150 specially trained and skilled staff work at the logistics centre.
DB Schenker has a workforce of almost 1,000 employees at 71 locations throughout Spain.
