Terex Port Solutions is supplying 24 Terex RTG cranes to Asyaport on the Sea of Marmara.

Terex Port Solutions (TPS) has supplied rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes to Turkey for the first time.

TPS received an order from Asyaport, a joint venture led by Terminal Investment Ltd SA (TIL), for 24 Terex RTG cranes. The cranes, E-RTG variants, are being designed and manufactured at the TPS facility in Xiamen, China. E-RTGs are powered by electricity from the terminal's electricity supply, which in this case is fed to the cranes along busbars.

The fleet of cranes is expected to be delivered at the end of 2014 and early in 2015, with delivery in batches, to Asyaport on the Sea of Marmara, about 150 km (93 mi.) west of Istanbul. TIL operates the port, which will be expanded to become one of Turkey's largest container terminals.

TPS Xiamen general manager Maurizio Altieri says: "This order means Terex rubber-tyred gantry cranes are celebrating a 'first' in Turkey."

Marc Desmons, TIL engineering services manager calls the Sea of Marmara "a crucial interface in trade between Asia and Europe and an important hub for the steadily increasing flow of goods across the Bosporus into the Black Sea.

"In addition, handling volumes are increasing due to rapid advancement in the Turkish economy. Thanks to the new cargo-handling machines from TPS, we will be well-placed to face these challenges."

The Terex RTG cranes can handle 40 T, have a hoisting height of 21 m (69 ft.) under the spreader and can stack standard containers 1-over-6. They have a span of 26.5 m (87 ft.), allowing them to cover seven rows of containers and a truck lane.

"Besides the quality and convincing performance indicators, we were particularly keen on the lifecycle costs, including the operating and maintenance costs, which are expected to be especially competitive," Desmons says.
