Jungheinrich UK Ltd has supplied and installed a narrow-aisle pallet racking system for RDC, the world's largest IT disposal and recycling company.
RDC had operated from four separate buildings in Witham, Essex, but consolidated the business in one purpose-built 340,000 sqft. (31,587 sqm) facility on a 22 ac. (9 ha) site in Braintree earlier this year.
The move to the new site enabled the company to double its pallet storage capacity.
"We sought a racking supplier that could [not only] work around our initial design, but could also work quickly and efficiently alongside other trades as we refurbished our new store," says Chris Garn, head of customer services for RDC.
After a competitive tender process, RDC awarded the contract to supply and install the racking system, with over 7,200 pallet locations, to Jungheinrich.
Although it's best known for its materials handling equipment, Jungheinrich has offered a full range of racking and storage systems as a core part of its product portfolio for over 20 years.
The RDC racking scheme is used to store a range of computer hardware, which has been through the RDC refurbishment process and is awaiting delivery to users. About 75% of all the units collected by RDC are re-used, with the remainder stripped down and recycled.
The racking system is six levels high and the aisles are 2,250 mm (7.4 ft.) wide, enabling forklifts to pick from the upper beams at the same time as workers pick faster-moving lines from the ground and first-floor levels. The aisles are served by articulated forklifts.
The Jungheinrich installation team "worked quickly and efficiently and the final project sign-off process was very impressive. The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule", says Garn.
The value of the contract is confidential.
