RFID access monitoring devices from Keytroller are offered in three models designed for different applications and different budgets.

Why use RFID instead of keyed in codes or ignition key?
  • Codes are easily stolen
  • Clients buy these systems to improve the security and safety of their forklift fleetRFID cards are issued to each employee typically used for entering doors and time clocks
  • Using his personal RFID company card significantly reduces the chance of "invalid" drivers accessing the forklift
  • Using codes may NOT improve security significantly unless management is monitoring usage data closely
How does an RFID card work with the KEYTROLLER devices?
  1. Driver passes his RFID card over the keypad "scanning field"
  2. Card reader under the keypad detects and "wakes up" the RFID chip in the card/FOB
  3. The card/fob transmits the ID information on its microchip and is "read" by the device
  4. If it is a valid ID card for that device and vehicle, the unit will enable---allowing trained operator to start
  5. If it is an invalid ID in the card, the device will NOT allow access If enabled, the driver presses START button to start the engine (keys are eliminated)
  6. If it is the first start of the shift, he must complete the checklist

What is an RFID card?
RFID stands for Radio-Frequency IDentification. The acronym refers to small electronic devices that consist of a small chip and an antenna. The chip typically is capable of carrying 2,000 bytes of data or less.
The RFID device serves the same purpose as a bar code or a magnetic strip on the back of a credit card or ATM card; it provides a unique identifier for that object. And, just as a bar code or magnetic strip must be scanned to get the information, the RFID device must be scanned to retrieve the identifying information. A significant advantage of RFID devices over the others like bar code or magnetic readers is that the RFID device does not need to be positioned precisely relative to the scanner, simply present it in the proximity of the reader. This is why they are called "Prox readers".

What is the difference between ACTIVE and PASSIVE cards/tags?
Active RFID tags have their own battery power source; the advantage of these tags is that the reader can be much farther away and still get the signal, because it is transmitting. Active battery powered cards have limited life spans. Passive RFID system used with Keytroller systems do not require batteries and can be much smaller and have a virtually unlimited life span.

What are the components of an RFID reader system?
System has three parts:
  • A scanning antenna (located in Keytroller device)
  • A transceiver with a decoder to interpret the data (located in Keytroller device)
  • A transponder - the RFID card/FOB - that has been programmed with ID information.
The scanning antenna in the Keytroller puts out radio-frequency signals in a relatively short range. The RF radiation does two things:
  1. It provides a means of communicating with the transponder (the RFID tag)
  2. It provides the RFID tag with the energy to communicate (in the case of passive RFID tags).
This is an absolutely key part of the technology; passive RFID tags do not need to contain batteries, and can therefore remain usable for very long periods of time.

What is the most common RFID card in use today?
HID Prox manufactured by HID Corp (www.hidglobal.com) is by far the most common in use in industrial applications today. Keytroller offers readers for both the HID Prox and the HID I Class type card.

How can I tell what type of RFID card is in use?
Most HID type cards have HID imprinted or embosses on the card or FOB surface. If not, you can send one of your cards to KEYTROLLER for evaluation. If the card can not be read by the KEYTROLLER device, the client can always affix an adhesive wafer to the card which can be read by the device.

What types of RFID media can be used with a KEYTROLLER device?
  1. CARD: Credit card sized, it includes a wound antenna and chip within the card itself
  2. ADHESIVE TAG: Designed to "turn" a common plastic card into an RFID enabled card. About the size of a quarter coin
  3. FOB: Keychain style about the size of a thumb
How many KEYTROLLER models are available with RFID card readers?
LCD-601: KEYTROLLER Top of the line WiFi color access monitoring system
KEY-105: KEYTROLLER "Mid range" access monitoring system, radios optional
SSD-215: START-SMART Entry level keyless ignition

Fleet RFID cards
  1. If it is a valid ID card for that device and vehicle, the unit will enable---allowing trained operator to start. If enabled, the driver presses START button to start the engine (keys are eliminated)
  2. If it is an invalid ID in the card, the device will NOT allow access.
  3. If it is the first start of the shift, he must complete the checklist.
Do KEYTROLLER devices fit to any make or model forklift?
Yes , electric, LPG, Gasoline or Diesel powered vehicles from 12 to 80VDC
