The tactical systems division of Parsippany-based DRS Technologies Inc is expanding its line of computer tablets suitable for materials handling applications.

Thin and lightweight at less than 1.5 lb. (0.68 kg), the Armor X7et and Armor X7ad rugged tablets work with more mounting configurations than larger tablets.

Placement of the tablet in a forklift or other vehicle maximises the operator's ability to read and process data, while minimising interference with the operator's vision or range of movement, the company claims.

The compact tablets fit in materials handling vehicles including forklifts where space is at a premium. Armour docking and powering solutions help with attachment to forklifts and other materials-moving vehicles.

The computers have a 7 in. (17.5 cm) multi-touch screen and offer field service workforces the ability to choose between the fast-growing Android OS and the enterprise-friendly Microsoft Windows platform.

The models are easy to carry in circumstances where an operator moves a mobile computer from vehicle to vehicle.

In addition, DRS offers a new convertible tablet, the Armor X12kb, which the company characterises as the market's lightest convertible tablet that meets military standard 810G for extremes in temperature, vibration, shock and drops.

The tablet weighs 5.5 lb. (2.5 kg) and features a 12.1 in. (30 cm) sunlight-readable swivel touch-screen that incorporates polarised LCD glass and anti-reflective technology.

Military applications for the tablets could include materials handling and similar support functions.

DRS is a wholly owned subsidiary of industrial conglomerate Finmeccanica SpA of Rome, Italy.
