Vehicles and moving machinery in workplaces are a cause of workplace injuries and deaths.

Everyone (Employers, Employees and contractors) has a duty to work in a safe manner and prevent hazards in the workplace where possible.

Through the efforts of safety officers and external safety enforcement agencies organisations have become more aware of potential hazards and some of the methods that can be used to minimise risk. However, many injuries and deaths still occur in the workplace as a result of collision between moving objects and personnel in close proximity.

Blind spots (typically at the rear of the vehicle, or locations where vehicle attachments obscure clear view) and poor visibility environments (such as Low level lighting, dust, smoke and steam) present higher risk of collision.

BodyGuard Safety Solutions has developed the BodyGuard proximity detection and warning system to help minimise risk of collision due to close proximity. The system provides both an audible and visual warning to the vehicle operator if an object (another vehicle or person) is detected within the programmable proximity detection zone.

The latest version 5.0 provides almost immediately alerts the driver with flashing visual warning and alert sound followed by human voice description of what has been detected and the location. For instance: "Warning ! person behind you" and "Look Out ! vehicle in front of you"

The system can be extended with fixed "beacons" placed in hazardous zones to alert the driver. ("Caution ! Pedestrian area", "Careful ! Hole in road"). The beacon units are also available with visual warning that can alert nearby personnel of an approaching vehicle in a shared work are such as packing area or picking in aisles.

The vehicle units also contact a record of the last 2000 proximity events (date, time, ID and type of device detected and whether entering or leaving the proximity detection zone). This can be used for audit purposes after an incident or as a pro-active risk reduction tool. (The data in the log can be used to identify areas of high risk. The work process can be changed and then the log analysed to determine whether risk has actually been reduced). Large vehicles can be fitted with multiple proximity detection units to form more of an all-round detection zone.
