Ageing fleets and rising values of aerial work platform equipment serve as encouraging market indicators, JLG parent firm Oshkosh Corp says in a 6 March industry conference presentation.

Oshkosh utilised January data from Rouse Asset Services.

Rouse reports the average age of articulating booms is 53.0 months, that for scissor lifts 57.1 months and that for telescopic booms 57.7 months.

Further, Rouse says the orderly liquidation values of used articulating booms increased 14.2% over six months. The values for used scissor lifts rose 14.1%, and those for telescopic booms 3.5%, in each case over six months.

Beverly Hills, California-based Rouse appraises rental and dealer construction equipment and works closely with the largest rental companies and construction equipment dealers in North America and Europe.

David Sagehorn, Oshkosh executive vice president and chief financial officer, and Patrick Davidson, Oshkosh vice president of investor relations, made the presentation during the 2012 annual industrial conference of the investment research, brokerage and consulting firm ISI Group, officially International Strategy & Investment, in New York.

In the presentation, Oshkosh says it is targeting global expansion in emerging markets for its access, defence, fire/emergency and commercial equipment lines.

In particular, the Asian access equipment market is "one-tenth the size of (the) North American market", Oshkosh says.

"Industrial development and increased product penetration (are) expected to drive about 30-40% (compound annual growth rate) in (Asian) market size by fiscal year 2016," Oshkosh estimates.

For the fiscal year ended 30 September, the Oshkosh access equipment sector including aerial work platforms, telehandlers and towing-recovery units accounted for USD2.05 billion of the corporation's consolidated net sales of USD7.58 billion.

The access equipment sector has 11 manufacturing facilities including a 193,000 sqft. (17,370 sqm) Tianjin, China operation making boom lifts and scissor lifts.
