Kalmar RT Center has completed the last of the 1,244 RT240 rough-terrain container handlers to fulfill its contract with the United States Department of Defense.

The value of the contract is undisclosed.

According to Kalmar RT, the RT240 is the only materials handler that operates in the world's most remote locations where roadways are unfinished or non-existent. This allows military troops to move and store containerised defense equipment in parts of the world where former logistics prevented it.

Kalmar RT says fulfilling the military contract has opened up capacity for manufacturing commercial vehicles for sale locally and worldwide. The only difference between the military and commercial grade RT240 is paint colour. The commercial grade RT240 will still have the ability of transporting a 56,000 lb. (25,401 kg) container in lengths of 20 or 40 ft. (6 or 12 m), at grades of up to 27%, and can operate in up to 5 ft. (1.5 m) of water.

"The Kalmar RT240 rough-terrain reach stacker increases productivity in ways never imagined," says Kalmar RT Center vice president of product and business development, Randy Wingenroth. "We are bringing the efficiencies learned through a decade of improving logistics for the US military and sharing it with the world."

Over the last 12 years, Kalmar's research and development has designed attachments that stretch across several industries, including a forklift kit and sling attachment allowing the RT240 to carry more than just containers.

The Kalmar RT Center claims to be the world's only rough-terrain reach stacker manufacturer. Based in Cibolo, Texas, Kalmar RT produces the RT240 rough-terrain reach stacker and the RT022 rough-terrain telehandler. Initially produced for the US military, the RT240 and RT022 are now available to companies internationally.
