Swedish furniture retailer Ikea has been fined GBP80,000 (USD127,635) after a forklift driver at its Bristol outlet was injured in an accident.

Bristol Business News reports that Philip Edgecombe broke two bones in his left arm and dislocated his shoulder while driving a forklift in the store. The mast of his truck collided with a horizontal racking beam as he was driving between two aisles. The truck stopped suddenly and he was thrown from the vehicle.

After investigating the incident in July 2010, Bristol City Council's public health services team brought the case against Ikea, which pleaded guilty to four health and safety offences at Bristol Magistrates Court. Each breach received the maximum fine of GBP20,000 (USD31,909).

Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods Guy Poultney said that Ikea had accepted responsibility for the accident and made changes to ensure that it did not happen again.
