New Zealand's Department of Labour has issued a warning about the potential dangers of forklifts and carbon monoxide.

The department says forklift dealers have a responsibility to make sure their customers have the information they need to choose the right forklift for their environment and are legally required to advise on the hazards of carbon monoxide.

Fuel-powered forklifts using LPG, petrol or diesel emit the deadly gas which can quickly build up in a confined space where there is little or no ventilation.

It's odourless, has no taste and cannot be detected without special monitoring equipment, so people can become exposed to carbon monoxide without realising it.

If you are using fuel-powered forklifts in a confined space, such as a cool store, you should use an electric-powered forklift. If this isn't possible or if carts and trolleys can't be used, you should:

* develop a policy on the use of forklifts and associated hazards - inform, train and supervise staff and monitor their health;
* restrict use in poorly ventilated or confined areas - turn them off if you're not working;
* tune them regularly and test them for carbon monoxide emissions;
* install carbon monoxide alarms on forklifts or in buildings and tell your supervisor or manager immediately if these alarms sound.
