Cargotec is investing about EUR35 million (USD46.6 million) in building a technology and competency centre in Tampere, Finland.

CEO Mikael Mäkinen says Tampere will serve as "the spearhead for technologies related to energy efficiency and the intelligent use of machines".

"Many of Cargotec's current solutions were not even imaginable some decades ago, but are now leading examples of technology in their field. We are creating the future of container handling in Tampere."

Mäkinen explains that the centre will co-operate with Tampere University of Technology, research institutions and companies manufacturing mobile equipment.

The site will host Cargotec's most extensive test area, which will facilitate the testing and simulation of various solutions, including automated equipment and fleets, navigation systems and remote steering and control.

Cargotec is also investing in developing new energy-efficient solutions. It claims the new facility is a forerunner in energy efficiency in office buildings in Finland.

The foundation stone for the centre, which will be completed by 2013, was laid last week. Cargotec says the centre will consist of modern facilities on a 10 ha (24.7 acre) industrial site close to Tampere University of Technology. It will be a part of Cargotec's global network of competence centres and will develop innovative solutions for its industrial and terminal business area.

Cargotec's brands, Hiab, Kalmar and MacGregor, provide cargo and load handling solutions globally. In 2010, sales totaled EUR2.6 billion (USD3.5 billion) and about 11,000 people were employed.
