Ohio cites Crown for environmental achievements
Columbus, OH, United StatesA State of Ohio agency presented 2010 awards for outstanding achievement in environmental compliance to Crown Equipment Corp of New Bremen and Lubrizol Corp of Wickliffe.
The state environmental protection agency (EPA) recognised Crown's plant in New Knoxville for its zero landfill waste output. The accomplishment during 2009 was attributed to effective practices for recycling, reuse and waste reduction. In January, the site received ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system.
"One of the most important steps in achieving zero landfill status and receiving ISO 14001 certification is creating an open channel for internal communication," says Brian Duffy, director of corporate environmental and manufacturing safety with forklift manufacturer Crown. "To a great extent, achieving these types of goals depends on the level of employee buy-in and involvement."
Crown environmental administrator Tonja Hardin and New Knoxville plant employees Troy Flenar, Paula Fischer and Dorothy Winter accepted the award from the Columbus-based agency.
Manufacturing electric motors and plastic parts, the New Knoxville plant employs 90 workers, occupies 40,000 sqft (3,600 sqm) and recycles 96% of its waste. Crown converts the remaining 4% in a state-of-the-art waste-to-energy facility.
Ohio EPA reviewers visited sites of the highest ranked nominees prior to selecting Crown and specialty chemical producer Lubrizol for the awards.
