Batteries come in a wide variety of types and sizes, powering everything from household devices to industrial vehicles like forklifts, with options like lithium-ion, deep cycle, and starter batteries suited for different needs. TVH offers an extensive range of batteries, chargers, and maintenance products, along with expert guidance to help customers find the right solution for their applications.
At home, in the workplace and just about everywhere else in the modern world, battery-powered equipment makes life easier. There’s a battery-powered machine, appliance, or device to optimise almost every activity from sunup to sundown and all night long. And the batteries required to keep the power flowing are as varied as the machines themselves. From the tiny button cell batteries that keep watches ticking to the heavy-duty batteries that enable forklifts to work all day without a recharge, batteries come in a huge range of types, shapes, and sizes.
To know which battery is the best fit for a particular application, you need to know a little about the different types that are available. The TVH range is grouped into categories to help narrow the search.
Household batteries
Household batteries are exactly what they sound like: the general-purpose batteries commonly used to power electronic devices found around the house like remote controls, toys and torches, as well as some power tools and larger appliances. This category includes button cell batteries and the familiar batteries you might know as AA’s, AAA’s, D’s, and E’s.
Starter batteries
All vehicles from cars to industrial machines and warehouse equipment that are thermal engine powered require a sharp burst of power to get going, which is exactly what a starter battery delivers. Starter batteries have more kick than other types of batteries because they only need to supply power for a short period of time. Once the vehicle receives that initial power boost, different parts of the engine take over, and the battery can be recharged.
Cyclic batteries
‘Deep cycle’ refers to this type of battery’s ability to keep power flowing by repeatedly discharging and recharging. Deep cycle batteries deliver consistent power over a sustained period of time. They’re used in warehouse equipment like burden carriers, last mile delivery vehicles as well as mobile elevating work platforms and industrial cleaning machines.
There are different types of deep cycle batteries available at TVH, including Monoblock traction, VRLA gel, VRLA AGM, semi traction, US deep cycle and VRLA lead carbon.
Lithium-ion batteries
Lightweight and durable, lithium-ion batteries are an increasingly popular choice for electric vehicles because they offer high energy density and a long lifespan. With a high storage capacity, lithium-ion batteries provide power for long periods of time, making them ideal for getting through the workday. They can be charged quickly, freeing operators from restrictive charging regulations and the need to swap batteries. This has helped them become the go-to batteries for use in electric cars. The use is also increasing rapidly in the industrial markets such as electric forklifts and other electric machines, as well as in stationary applications.
Stationary batteries
These batteries are designed for use in stationary equipment that always needs to be powered up. Stationary batteries are built to receive a constant charge and release energy little by little. They are most commonly used as back-up batteries for hospital systems, alarm systems, servers and communication systems—anywhere a power outage could be disastrous.
There are two main types of stationary Lead batteries available: VRLA batteries and gel batteries. Both are particularly long-lasting, offering up to 12 years of use in standby applications.
Traction batteries
Many industrial electric vehicles like forklifts, reach stackers and pallet trucks are powered by rechargeable traction batteries. With a high storage capacity, traction batteries can provide power for long periods of time, making them ideal for getting through the workday. A traction battery consists of several 2 V cells; the more cells connected in a series, the more voltage the battery delivers. TVH offers a range of traction batteries supplied by our partner, Battery Supplies.
