There are three characteristics of the bill of lading:
1- It serves as the proof of the contract of freight.
2- It serves as a receipt of shipment.
3- It serves as a document of title

If you mean what is required in the document, it would be type of product, serial number if applicable, number of units and the shipping weight. the document also has the shippers name and address and the destination name and address and the carriers name.
Usually it is a two part document. One copy for shipper and one for carrier.
