Discussion:
Toyota Simple Fuel

Just wondering if any one has seen the press release of Toyota about simplefuel. This is a hydrogen producer and dispenser for Hydrogen forklifts. Toyota say simplefuel is a small water electrolysis-based machine for hydrogen generation and filling that can produce, store, and supply hydrogen by making use of electricity generated from so-lar power, a renewable energy resource.

SimpleFuel is a simplified hydrogen station that uses electricity from solar panels at the plant site to produce low-carbon hydrogen from the electrolysis of water, which is then supplied to fuel-cell forklifts (FC forklifts) after it is compressed and pressurized. It can produce up to 99 Nm3/day (approx. 8.8 kg/day) of hydrogen, enough to fuel seven or eight FC forklifts. Its compact size means it can be installed in small spaces, making it suitable for refueling FC forklifts within the plant.

Now to me 8.8 kg of hydrogen is not a lot of Hydrogen and if that amount can power even seven forklifts that means each forklift would use 1.25kg of hydrogen per day.

A toyota Mirai car has a range of 312 mile and a fuel tank capacity of 5Kg

Another very interesting point would be how much does this system cost

Hi Jetty

Do you think Toyota will run this as a complete package for say a company that's wanting to rent around 10 pieces of equipment in a warehouse.

Also what are your thoughts on the different gases that are now coming to market. FTP Industrial which is a part of CNH industrial that are looking at developing wheel loaders that run of Biomethane

One kg (2.2 lb) of hydrogen has the equivalent BTU energy of one (1) gallon of gasoline. (For the record, one gallon of diesel has 13% more energy than one gallon of gasoline.)
So 8.8 kg of H2 would = 8.8 gallons of gasoline in terms of BTU content, conceivably enough to fuel 7 or 8 forklifts working very light duty.
The question is the capital cost of the Toyota system to purchase and what is the cost of maintenance & repairs to it? Does Toyota turnkey lease the system would be another interesting question..
