make sure you have the correct com driver installed that matches the serial port device or usb device.
back when i was working for cat our laptops were eventually updated and switched over to usb ports only and they did away with the serial db9 port which was how diagnozer was originally designed, we had to install a specific driver using a specific serial to usb adapter. Cat also redesigned the cable with a new plug but i'm pretty sure what you get now is the current one. The biggest improvement they made was how the plug inserted into the mating plug on the truck, the earlier version did not plug in completely and tech's were having issues with communication consistency, they redesigned the plug to allow it to plug in better.
a belkin usb to serial adapter , we got ours from staples but you can go on belkin's website and search for usb to serial adapter or just search for it on google and it comes up.
I've tried others and they don't work, this is the only i've found that does.
This was supplied by cat usually
Otherwise you will get this communication error.

Have you got the correct caterpillar/mitsubish diagnostic cable (the black one with lots of plugs) are you connecting to an electric truck or ic. With many of the electric trucks you need to use a pcan usb adaptor, with ic trucks just a usb to serial adaptor.
