Discussion:
Axles & transmissions outsource versus inhouse manufacturing

What are in your vision the drivers that make forklift manufacturers to outsource axles and transmissions versus vertically integrating that into business?

Some of the forklift producers also make their own axles and transmissions but with several occasions they also outsource these components. When and why would they decide going out looking for axles?

Outsource of earth moving equipment parts should be encourage because this makes it possible for other manufacturers to make thier sales and many job seekers employed more so the principal company can mass produce at low cost and time.I will advice principal manufactures to please ensure that any parts purchased meet the standard specification.

There are many factors that go into the decison of buy vs. make, some are:
1. Engineering expetise, testing & other development costs.
2. Cost to tool up to produce - machine, employees, space
3. Sales/Production Volume
4. Sales Price
5. Product support - parts, technical, etc
6. Warranty costs
7. Cost per unit to buy vs cost to make

Volume is what drives most decisions - the lift truck market by comparison is small in unit volume and in sales dollars/unit when compared to other equipment
or the auto industry.
