There are many factors that go into the decison of buy vs. make, some are:
1. Engineering expetise, testing & other development costs.
2. Cost to tool up to produce - machine, employees, space
3. Sales/Production Volume
4. Sales Price
5. Product support - parts, technical, etc
6. Warranty costs
7. Cost per unit to buy vs cost to make

Volume is what drives most decisions - the lift truck market by comparison is small in unit volume and in sales dollars/unit when compared to other equipment
or the auto industry.
