Found the problem. pulled out the filter asembly in the tank and found the plastic housing in the filter assembly was cracked allowing the return fluid to bypass the filter and go in to the vent area of the assembly

You may be on to something there Lumberjack, I know nothing has been altered on this unit but it does lower rather quickly in my opinion. I have never had to change a velocity fuse on the main lift line before though. Is there any flow control in the lift spool valve in the control valve?

I haven't had Clarks for awhile but every Clark I've ever worked on has had a flow control valve at the base of the lift cylinder. This should slow lowering to a reasonable speed even if the lift line breaks.

Does it do OK if you lower more slowly? If the load comes down like someone dropping a flower pot from the roof, that's the real problem. A new breather cap wouldn't hurt either, even if the old one seems clear.

You might want to check the mast lowering control valve (maybe some one removed or modified it to allow the mast to lower faster). Not certain if this unit has a baffle plate or diffuser in the but if they are missing or damaged it could cause this issue.

liftguy, get a look inside the tank to see where the return is dumping it sounds like the connections to the tank may have been swapped.
