Discussion:
Only way to start by disconnecting battery???

The lift will start when you disconnect the battery reattach leads. I've traced every wire in the harness no resistance. Before I start throwing parts of this any ideas?

Do you have an electric schematic for that unit ?
Some have a key switch relay that closes when turning on ignition giving power to unit and powering dash etc some are built into dash or in the ecu I would check voltage at key switch make sure you have power to it then turn on and check voltage coming out and trace the ignition wire to first source then down the line until I lost the voltage

Remove lower operator kick panel. Remove the connector on the lower right side of the VSM. This supplies power to everything. Verify all pins and sockets are clean. Connect back and see if the lift starts. If so, could be a bad controller or relay. The fuse box cover states what relays do what. Good Luck

Im getting no power to the machine unless i disconnect, then reattach the battery leads. Then it starts like normal and works great until i turn it off. Then no power again.

Sounds as though an electronic relay sticking
Possibly an anti start relay
The relay keeps the starter from turning after unit starts as to protect ring gear and starter

Scott,

I would first try new relays swapping relays or installing new. How is the ignition switch set up, push button or key? Does the lift set outside, possible water intrusion? Make sure there has been no damage to lift, I have seen where a customer put a fork between the frame and covers damaging the wire harness. Good luck

This sounds like a weird problem is there any codes in dash if not the only thing l could think of is this is a guess maybe you have a ecm problem in the engine controller.by disconnecting the battery you are waking up the computer. and the truck starts. Good luck.
