hey Adam. so I replaced the battery and that seemed to do the trick. my poor forklifts are abused by our contractors so its an uphill battle at this point. thanks for the response though! I appreciate it!

So DTC 168-4 indicates 1 of 2 things. 1) The battery is at over 16V which would be either an alternator failure or a functional failure in the controller. 2) The battery is too low which would be either battery failure, alternator failure, operational time being too low between uses, or parasitic draw.

Hey guys. just signed on to this. I'm having some trouble with our Hyster 110hft s005. its throwing a 168-4 code and there is a faint beeping coming from around the fuse panel/hydraulic tank, as well as a electrical whining sound. I put a multimeter on it and it seemed to have a power fluctuation of 12,10,and 8. but when I go to start it the terminal on the dash kills off and then when I release the key it does the beeping and what not but doesn't even act like it wants to start. I'm assuming battery? let me know, thanks!

We have seen the voltage spike to 14.7-14.8 on some trucks but it is not normal. The 16 volt is what the VSM sees as out of range which throws the code.

the ecu needs to see greater than 16 volts to throw the code. Normal output from the alternator is 14.5, you are correct

if it was reading 16v from the alternator it would be overcharging and boiling the battery dry. it should be no more than 14.5v at the alternator

This code is for battery voltage hi or lo. Check voltage out put from alternator. If it is below 16 volts than the problem is the battery is dropping below 10 volt while cranking. This is usually a battery about to fail.
