Discussion:
Traction motor sparking

This SP I have has been giving me some fits here lately. It started out to where reverse was intermittent. sometimes after playing around with the deadman switch and potentiometer handle it would decide to work. Other times it would work perfectly. but the issue I am having now is that the traction motor is sparking next to the brushes. the cables on 2 of the brushes are almost like they were burnt. I changed those out and its still doing it. Any suggestions?

intermittant reverse contactor?
either tips are just worn not connecting good every time or the contactor itself is dirty or worn out.

ok good to know. I pulled the traction motor head and cleaned everything and made sure I had good connections. After reinstalling I had no more sparking. I do however still have intermittent reverse. every now and then the reverse contactor will not kick in all the way. after you let off the twist grip and try again sometimes it will work and other times it will take a few times.

if you did change the brushes did you use a seating stone to seat the brushes to the armature? If you do not then yes you may get sparking because the brushes are not seated flat on the armature, plus if the armature surface is dirty or carboned over it can cause excess sparking.
