Discussion:
Instructor Course DE12

Morning, I appreciate this subject had most likely been talked about befor and I apologise for that. I just need some fact and information regarding instructors course.

I'm 32 years old, I've driven counter balance trucks since I was 14 years old due to my grand dad having a small farm. I have held a counterbalance and reach truck licence since 2009 and since then I have attained my banksman certificate. That's a little background about me.

For the past two years I've been toying with the idea of going for my flt instructors course. And 2018 is the year I will take the plunge. I've currently got about half the money saved and should have the rest by december/January. I've spoken to a few company's around the area (Swadlincote derbyshire) and to be honest no one has been helpful. They don't have dates set. They won't give me definite prices etc

Firstly is I right the price can vary between £1200-£1600?
The course is two weeks, I know you're assessed the whole way through but what tests are actually taken there? Anyone here help me with places near me that can take me on in the new year?

I'm pretty confident about passing. My original test I got 3 points my two refreshers since saw me getting 4 and 2.

What I can't find much information regarding text books etc. Once the fee is paid do companies send out books to learn legislation from? At the end of the course when passing do you get given the necessary visual aids IE dvd to show students and test papers? Or is that extra expense after?

It's a new life for me in the new year. I have a big family and I'm striving to make something of my self along with helping people learn and help them overcome problems I have found with instructors and other stuff. My current job is alright but it's never going to keep a family of 7 happy.

I understand Itll be a long time before I'm earning a fair wage. That doesn't bother me and I have strategies in place regarding advertising etc.

I look forward to your help and replies.

Hi Rhino,
I cannot help with local providers of LT instructor courses, but you could contact RTITB or ITSSAR for info on local providers. They may also provide their own courses.
With both RTITB and ITSSAR courses, you would have to take the basic test on your chosen truck (if you have both c/b & reach, try both). The pass mark is at Instructor Level (25 penalties, rather than 40 for operators). Thereafter, your assessments are probably:
(ITSSAR) Giving a theory presentation, Conducting a practical demonstration, Delivering a practical lesson (which may be combined with the demonstration), Setting up and conducting a skills test and Writing an end of training report. These take place during your course. Most centres will provide detailed notes. You will also do an associated knowledge theory examination.
(RTITB) Training in practical demonstrations and practical lessons. Some will also give practice in delivering a theory lesson. Training in setting up and conducting a practical skills test. Your assessments are in the Instructor's examination on the last day: associated knowledge test, a nominated demonstration and practical lesson. Again, most centres will provide course notes.
Both organisations will provide training guides, materials, etc., but they may be chargeable.
As the courses are in Techniques of Instruction, which are common, the types of truck used are generally electric counterbalanced.
I hope that this helps, but please bear in mind that, although I have worked for both organisations and have now been retired for a little while, my information may be a little out of date.

The use of "hello" as a telephone greeting is attributed to Thomas Edison. He is said to have suggested it as a simpler alternative to other greetings, such as "Do I get you?" or "Are you there?".
