Discussion:
CROWN LIFTS IS GOING IC ????

The ongoing question if Crown will ever introduce a IC lift truck has been answered? I seen three unusual IC lift at a facility today. My first glance at a IC lift that had alot of Crowns modern day FC electric counterbalance look. It was a prototype called the RTS-50. The thing just looked like a CROWN no doubt. It had a John Deere power plant. Very deisel looking the valve cover was almost a foot wide. The engine was running on propane, but even sounds like a deisel. The truck looked very basic somewhat like a KOMATSU (nothing to fancy very common place machine) Some say Crown has been working on this for years. Looks like it is almost hear. Word is the lift is being built in there Indiana facility with production to start very soon. Is it to late for Crown IC indeavor? As I drove away from this facility this question kept coming to mind, because of the company just down the street. Plug Power motive power division. The hydrogen fuel cell people. I was a very short distance (15 miles) from Crowns New Bremen, Ohio headquarters. Plug power has two marketing people from Crown. Times might be tough, but Crown Lift Trucks has got more going on than you can imagine. Good Luck to all.

I agree. There will not be a John Deere engine in any lift truck any time in the near future and if Crown introduces an IC truck in 2008, which I think they will, it will not be manufactured by them [Crown] but by Komatsu or Doosan. That could open the door for Komatsu or Doosan (or whoever builds the Crown IC) to have Crown private label Class II trucks for whoever they partner with.

It is hard for me to imagine that John Deere would develop an engine just for IC lifts. I can't think of anything else that John Deere makes that they could use this engine for that would fit in your typical 5000# capacity LP gas truck. The Nissan engine is used in Tusk, Komatsu, Nissan, and even Caterpillar/Mitsubishi trucks. The development costs for an engine to meet the new EPA standards is high. You have to sell a lot of to pay for your investment.

Hi you all,

Both Hyster/Fortis and Yale/Veracitor could have been Crown's closest benchmark for their newly coming IC range development. These two US brands employed a traction control system designed by Phoenix International.

Crown also followed this advanced traction control concept from John Deere subsidiary, I can easily imagine.

As Fortis (Fortens) & Veracitor have on board Mazda and GM LP engines, Crown to source their IC engine from John Deere, I guess. This is also good for differentiating Hyster and Yale, their US forerunners.

Let's wait and see.........

used to be a key
I would be suprised to see a John Deere engine in anything other than John Deere equipment. However, it would give Crown a "made in USA" truck that is actually made in the USA with US parts. What an angle that would be!

liftpopguy is right on the money. Crown will introduce and manufacture there own ICE engine design & the units are scheduled to be built in Indiana. I personally know the marketing guy at Crown that is in charge of the program.

Rigt now Crown is buying trucks thru Komatsu (the Tusk brand) & Doosan.

I had some info that Komatsu is building the IC units for Crown, just to give the US Crown dealers an option on IC trucks.

Crown would never build thier own units not worth it to them

The lift truck I seen has nothing in common with Doosan. It has Crown writen all over it. Just wait and see. They are a very agressive company, and will be a number one sales contender.

Crown has had an IC truck for some time now, just not in the US. However, I doubt if Crown will build their own truck. Crown builds a great electric truck and I doubt very much if they will divide their attention between building an IC and an electric. I would not be surprised to see a Crown IC truck built by Doosan (the company currently building their Asian truck) arrive in the US sometime next year. That would give Crown added value for their national accounts and they could push their dealers who have a dual dealerships for IC trucks to drop their second line and concentrate solely on the Crown product.
