Storing Batteries

Can anyone tell me where i might find information on properly storing spare forklift batteries, and how often they should be charged?
Also anyone one in the Los Angeles area recommend a reliable battery maintenance company? We've had around 4 different companies come in and have had trouble getting them to come back out.
