If a driver uses mirrors or a reversing (back-up) camera while backing, the driver is looking in the direction of travel and meets the intent of the OSHA rule 1910.178(n)(6). OSHA does not require that the driver physically turn his or her head to look in reverse.
Most operators of container handlers have very limited visibility when backing because of the restricted line of sight caused by vehicle design. Reversing cameras would definitely be a safety improvement on this type of equipment.
