If its just a packing that goes either side of a o ring then cutting at a angle is a recognised way to fit,if it is a composite type seal which fits over a piston head with another rubber seal underneath then warming up in hot water is best then use a seal clamp tool(looks like a piston ring clamp/sleeve)for 1/2hr this puts it back in shape.
