Komatsu FG 18-16:
Removal of Steering axle

Just need a little help removing the steering axle. I have it all taken down but the pivot point there is a shaft I believe. I cant remove it too drop the whole assembly off the forklift. I paid for two repair guides and both are not quite the same model that I have. The full model number is FG-18st 16. For some reason the Fg-18st 17 is closer to what I have but still not the same.

Any insight would be appreciated this is my first Komatsu I have worked on I only have experience with Clarke and Hyster.

I got it out finally I had to buy a 4 inch mini jack for the porta power. Even with that I had two guys prying and me pounding with sledge. Its really in rough shape, I'm gonna try to get a re-manufactured one like you suggested my machine shop told me it was un-fixable because of the wear by the kingpins.

Thanks alot for your help.

Funny enough there was no bearings to be found completely worn off.
If I can get a re manufactured one I probably will. Good part is the motor and hydralics are in good shape just have to change a couple of hoses.

Thanks

The bushing on the pivot bar is a plastic. It's so hard that it wears the metal rather than the plastic. I think your king pins bushings are needle bearings. May be cheaper to get a reman steer axle then trying to repair yours because if everything's not exactly right when you're done it won't last long.

I have to take it out to fix the mangled carriage where the kingpins go through the right side is shaped like a 0 now from wear. It was a cheap one for a reason.

Sounds like it may be bent. What was the reason for it's removal?
It really is the stupidest attachment of a steer axle I've ever seen. The mount on the axle is forward of centerline causing the pin/bushing to wear/bend because the weight of the lift keeps trying to c*ck the axle rearwards. You may have to burn it out w/ a torch.

Wow its on there good, tried a porta pack with a fork inside the wheel wells wont even budge. I noticed the end of the shaft by the rad might be dented in. I think its almost time to pull the engine out and see If I can hit it or get a jack right on the shaft to push it out.

Thanks, I was worried I had missed something because of the wrong repair guide I have been using. I'll sweat it up tonight and try too get it out. The last owner didn"t like to grease anything just getting to this point has been quite an adventure. Gonna have to drop by the machine shop again before this is complete for sure.

Thanks again

There should be a retainer assy viewable from the rear. I usually support the steer axle w/a floor jack & pry the pivot bar out the back using the retainer assy for leverage.

If the bar is broken you'll have to drive it forward towards the engine & cut the end off as it hits the engine front pulley. Time consuming but doable.

There is nothing else holding the axle in place. If the bar is removed & it's still stuck in position- get the ole' pry bar out & work up a sweat!

Thanks you for the response. Yes that is the part I am trying to remove I have the counterweight removed I will take out the rad tonight. Is the pivot shaft just pushed in or is there a fastener in there some where.

Thanks for the quick response.

Not sure of your exact model but I've seen where you have to remove the counterweight 'cause the support pin-'pivot shaft'- is installed behind the counterweight. Look under the radiator- if there's a cross member with a pin filled hole (about an inch in diameter) directly in the center then you have the set up I describe.
