I feel kind of stupid asking this, but here it goes. How do you check the gear oil level in a Raymond 550-OPC30TT order picker? There is a dip stick, and when we pulled it out it read low (no oil actually). So we added about 1 cup (1/4 quart) of oil in it. We checked it about 20 minutes later and it still read no oil, so we added about another cup (1/4 quart. It sat for about another 5 to 10 minutes and when we checked it again it still read no oil. At that point we had no more gear oil, so the truck was put back into production. About 30 minutes later it was brought back because it was leaking oil, sure enough there was about 1/4 - 1/2 quart of oil on the ground where it had been sitting during lunch. Obviously we did something wrong, and I feel horrible about it, I should know better. Thank you in advance for any and all of your help/tips.

Did not have change any of the drive unit parts. Everything looked fine, must have not been leaking oil for very long. We replaced the seal and put it back together, holding up so far. It was recommended that we use a can of Permatex "The Right Stuff" One Minute Gasket Maker for the cover, that stuff was expensive, over $50 if I remember correctly.

How is it possible that the Drive Unit survived for so long with practically zero quantity of Gear Oil ?
Just curious, did you need to rebuild the Drive Unit ?
There are a couple of special tools for replacing that oil seal. I would recommend getting both tools.
Seems like a bad seal, truck has probably been low on oil for a while. Will replace seal. Any tips are appreciated.
