Discussion:
Power steering problem.

We have bought a second hand EP25K, series n° ETB8B50138 that have had the same problem from new brand, as the older owner comment us.
The power steering electric motor has been burning after short time of work (the first time after 80 hours and the fourth and last after 400 hours). Has been replaced for new ones each time, the last one by us and this time the electric motor came from factory with a built in fan an after 400 hour it burnt again.
Many technicians have been checking the system but nobody found the failure that result in this damage.
My question is if anyone has had similar trouble with it and if due an electric problem or a hydraulic problem.
It seem as the electric motor is too small for the hydraulic pump requirements. In work condition with cold fluid, the motor comptsumition reach 26 Amp. when the maximum must be under 21 Amp as the plate note. When the fluid get warm, it fall down to 23 Amp.
If anyone can give me a clue it will be very helpful because we are very concerned that we can´t use this forklift.
Thanks a lot.

We are awaiting for a new pump/motor kit from Cat in Miami by now. When it arrives, we will check the hydraulic pressure into the steering gear system and we will drop it to reduce the Amp. compsumition. It must work to keep the motor running well for a long term, thought.

I would not necessarily look for something to be bad, but simply the steering pressure may be set too high. If you reduce the steering pressure via the relief valve on the steering gear, you will see an immediate change in the current draw of the motor.

Just dropping the load by a couple of amps, below the rated load of the motor should be enough to ensure the motor lasts. Also make sure you carry out periodic inspection and replacement of the brushes before they have the oppurtunity to damage and stick in the plastic holders.

Thanks for your advises, Daniel.
I understand that the prevous owner have contacted Cat service in Chile but they didn´t find a solution that change the electric motor every time it failed, with the last one with the fan included.
I agree with you about the high pressure in the hydraulic system, may be because a bad relief valve regulation or a bad calculation of the pump / electric motor rate.
As you mention, if we change the pump for a smaller one it can mean driving problems in a small rooms, like our cold storage.

I would guess that your machine is working in a tight application with plenty of steering operation on full lock, and in a few of these applications overheating of the motor can occur however it can be solved, and in one of three ways.

The first and easiest method is to check the steering pressure and lowering it to reduce the loading on the motor. 26A is too much as you have noted and indicates that your steering pressure relief is set too high.

The next is the later motor with cooling fan which you have seen and has a higher current rating than the original part. This is actually the final solution for the issue and so if you've burnt this motor out then I'd suggest paying close attention to the steering pressure and lowering it.

The last option and one of the initial interim solutions is to change to a smaller pump with a lower cc which puts less load on the pump and thus allow it to run cooler. However in certain applications this may lead to an insufficient supply and cause hard steering.

I would suggest contacting your local dealer and asking for assistance in getting the parts and service information relating to the above. If they are not aware of the issue then they will need to contact Cat Lift Trucks in Houston to obtain it.

One would guess that maybe the original owner did not contact a dealer on this issue which has transferred the issue to you.

Thanks for your advise, Edward, but she is using special oil for cold storage because we bought the forklift as a pack with the plant that include a shellfish process room with a 1.000 ton cold storage and, on the other hand, we live on a very cold weather area.
We are thinking that maybe the cause can be a relief valve that is not working properly or the system need a bigger electric motor to drive it.
