Discussion:
oil coming from starter bell housing

I have just received a b10 towmotor. straight 6 cyc. strarts & runs great. I filled both tanks with oil & ran fine. When I parked it I noticed shortly after that oil was leaking from the center of the truck. When I crawled under the unit it is coming from where the starter mounts to the transmission. Any idea or help would be appreciated. the truck still runs fine & still leaks slowly then stops????

it does sound like a wet clutch system
that starter most likely is a wet starter which means its not only sealed on the bell housing with a gasket, the output shaft on the armature is also sealed.

I would go back and double check that and make sure its not leaking from behind the mount plate around the starter body itself.

If no oil is present around the body of the starter dripping off it then you just need to replace the mount gasket. If you do have oil coming from the starter body then remove it and take it to your local starter rebuild shop and have it rebuilt.

The model is a B10 as it is printed on the plate under the seat on the frame. And for the second poster there are @ fill ports on the left side of the unit. One is going to the power steering pump and the other is piped to the rams. The gas fill is on the right side which says gas. So I'll take bbforks on the idea of a wet clutch.

A little confused on filling BOTH tanks with hyd fluid.??????
One tank is for hyd fluid and the other is for gasoline......Just a thought.

I agree with bbforks on the wet clutch

Without knowing the model of your lift, it sounds like your lift may have what's called a wet clutch. This would mean that the bellhousing has oil in it which is sprayed on the clutch assy. Look for hosing going to the bellhousing. There should be a small pump attatched to the trans which pressurizes the spray onto the clutch.

If this is the case. the starter may either be incorrect for the application or simply a faulty/missing gasket at the starter.
