Loses power and knocks and hisses when put in gear.

Hello all, I am not a forklift mechanic but my boss won't get one or get a new forklift so I am trying to get all these issues taken care of. It was not running when i showed up I replaced the starter and it was starting put rough. I replaced the spark plugs. (Getting parts from an actual forklift dealer) it ran fine for a bit and now loses most power but doesn't die. Releases pressure and dies soon after that. Hydralics work fine. Checked the new spark plugs and two are already black, but the other two are not (I gapped them according to the official Manuel PDF I downloaded.) Thoughts? Ideas? Is this thing just garbage?
