Just got a old hyster and need some help

Hello, This is my fist post here so please bare with me if this is the wrong area for this post. I just got an older hyster from my work. I am unsure of the model number as the data plat is faded in that area. The S25A was a stab in the dark. Here is the serial number

B0010109450

the "B" could be a 0 not sure.

Any information would be helpful. But I would like to know the model number and year or a ball park year.

The only problem I have with it other then a dead battery is the main hydraulic is leaking out of a elbow near the top of the ram. When going up it dose not leak but once you stop up in the air fluid runs out of that elbow and the mast slowly descends. There is also a hose at at the bottom of the ram and it looks to be 1/4" or 3/8" male pipe thread. I am thinking I am missing a hard line that goes from the hose at the bottom to the 90deg elbow at the top of the ram. does this sound right? I had thought that there might have been a plug in that but that was before i notice the hose at the bottom of the ram.

I can take picture if needed.
Thanks
Michael

There were several different cylinders used on that model machine so you have to probably get the packing from a Hyster dealer by giving them the serial number. It looks like your cylinder has 2 shafts that come out of the top. That would use 2 different sized sets of seals. Remove the packing nuts and pull the shafts right out. Also a 3 wheel model I think is J25A. S is the 4 wheel models.

Here is a link to my online photo album. I was able to loosen the packing nut but before i get to far along i want to get some advice on what i am about to do.

From the looks of thing i should be able to remove the bolt going into the top end of the cylinder. Then there are two bolts holding that bracket to the mast. If i remove those 2 bolts i should be able to pull the slack out of the chains and lift that off the top of the cylinder. I should be able to pull the packing up and over the ram and out.

Dose this sound correct?

What do i need to know to buy a new "? packing kit ?"? Is there a online place i can get them from or are they a common thing I can get at machinery dealers IE: Caterpillar.

Is there any special tools i would need? Looks like there is some kind of spanner wrench that is used to unscrew the top retainer.

thanks

thanks for the reply guys. Is replacing the cylinder packing something that is half way simple? Do i need to remove the cylinder from the machine?

If the last digit of the serial number is a letter o then that's a mid '60s machine. That is a vent like proshadetree mentioned and there should be a hose running down the lift cylinder like you guessed connecting the 2 fittings. It runs back to the top of the hydraulic tank. It vents the air from the cylinder as it raises, but once the seals in the cylinder start to leak by, oil starts to come out of that vent and should be directed back to the tank.
