Discussion:
How much play is allowed in Toyota suspension?

I'm wondering how much play is allowed in most Toyota LPG lift suspension...mainly the tie rods. Seems like every truck has loose tie rods with side to side play. Also, the SAS pivot bushings....is any perceptible play allowed? I have a truck with only 6000 hrs that has up axial play in the SAS pivot. And how about trunion bearings? I'm finding a lot of slop in these lower mast pivots when i jack up the mast. Lots of give in some toyota's but what is the maximum allowable spec? Hope someone can share that info..

I use 1/16" (1.5mm) max play at EACH pin in the steering link system. This means I will tolerate no more than 1/8" (3mm) total on each steering knuckle to cylinder pair of pins, bushings, and plates.
On the steering axle trunnion bushings I say not more than 3/32" (2.3mm) play up and down. At that amount of play the bushing is nearly worn away on the upper section (in the frame pocket).
Equally important on the steering axle is the amount of fore and aft play of the axle to frame fit.
The clearance there on Toyota trucks up to 3 ton capacity should be.028" (.7mm) or less. I usually fit up with the thickest spacers that I can get in there, even if it results in zero clearance initially.
Try to put half the spacer thickness on the front pin and half on the back pin.

Toyota calls out for Molybdenum Disulfide grease for the steer axle trunnion bushings and for the mast trunnion bushings.
How many techs are using multi purpose grease instead?

RayTec If you think it worn then replace it,.020 should be good on the trunnions, most are plasic bushings, dont last if its a rough application, and you like your customer get steel bushings made up. Done it many times.I have done many changes to axles, trunnions and tilt pin and bushings

I was looking for what`s a pass on a safety...Inner tie rods all seem to have some side play, maybe an 1/8 inch or so movement. What`s the manufacturer`s spec for acceptable play? Even on most Propane Lifts.
Would.020 thou be allowable on a trunion brg? If it were a car. Specs are available easily available....but Lift trucks are a mystery

Thanks. I have compensated for wear a few times by shaving up to 1.5mm from the end faces of trunnion caps (area of bolt holes that meet the mast).
1/16" of play equals much more than 1/16" side sway play/slop at the tilt cylinder pins point of mast, and even more at the top end of the mast.

"addedstip of metal the mast caps"
Does that mean you added a shimming strip of metal to the mast trunnion cap to make it a smaller apparent diameter?
How do you secure this strip to the trunnion cap?

Also found this problem before, had oversize pins made for the sas pivot, toyotas machine work not the best , also mast pivots, pulled mast off measure the axle mount diameter, then measure the mast with cap installed, then again had bushings made ,and addedstip of metal the mast caps, you wont get it perfect, good luck
