Discussion:
Hours on a used machine

My company is looking at purchasing a used LPG lift truck. One of the lifts we're looking at is a 2000 Nissan 3500 lb with 6600 hours on it. I'm new to this so that seems like a lot of time to me. Is it?

Hi Scot for the age of that truck the hours are pretty low, Nissan as a rule have a bullet proof drive line, but with all trucks built from that vintage they are a bit light on, so a good look over the mast and steer axle is recommended,

Hi Scot

You may want to search through some of the earlier nawsletters as there has been articles related to California Emmisions and Large Spark Ignition machines, I believe the group was CARB.

Having said that you want to invest in a few hours of inspection time by a trustworthy Mechanic that does not have a vested interest.
Make sure that you get a compression test and leakdown test as well as mechanical inspection. A gas analyser used on the tailpipe emissions is also worth the investment.

Thank you everyone. I'll check on what you've all said. The lift will see very light duty but I don't want to deal with maintenance often.

Hi, here I go again from México, I used to be a salesman here for Nissan Forklift, And the best that I can recomended you is to check wich one is the motor, it could be a K15 or a K21, if it is a k21 it hardly damaged, cause this motor is ussualy in the 4000 and 5000 Lbs. But if the motor is a K15 we have been having trouble with the power of it after a less time.
Regards

Service that´s the point.
Scot, The big question is how well the truck has been cared for. I have trucks that have over 10,000 hours that still perform good. Do you have a way to check the history of the truck? If not give the truck a good going over. Has the truck been repainted to look good or to hide its past life. Look at the carrage and forks how far can you move the tips of the forks sideways. Good Luck
