TCM FHG30N5T:
Head Gaskets Z24

Inquiring if anyone has had issues with this type of machine with a Z24 engine. We have installed muliple head gaskets( usually coolant leaking into one of the cylinders)
Had the head checked and shaved, using brand name Fletpro gaskets.
Most recent complete engine rebuilt, lasted 200hrs , same prob with indications of valve stem scoring near the seat area and sealing ring on#3 cyl head gasket on the verge of blowing out. Using factory recommended spark plugs, timing and head torque, retorquing head after operation.Emmisions dialed in
Rad is recored for any cooling issues, no exhaust restrictions
Head bolt have plenty of thread /not bottoming out.

Has the deck of the block ever been checked for flatness? How are the cooling passages in the block where they meet the head?

Not familiar with this engine, but had a mitsu do the same thing- the block was warped at the head & the cooling passages were all mushroomed out at the head mating surface. Had to have a custom head gasket made, dropped the thermostat from a *195 to a 180 & ran the ignition slightly retarded- unit's been fine since (about 4 years running).

I`ve heard mixed opinions of dexcool and try to stay away from the stuff. We have been using a premium coolant. Thanks for the input.

this may sound off the wall but what type of coolant are you running in the cooling system?
I know in the automotive applications they run dexcool in thier cooling systems and and have seen it in some lifttrucks as well, dexcool has a tendency to eat up the gaskets. I know of many occasions i have seen tech bulletins about the corrosive nature of dexcool and the effect it has causing constant leaks from gasket sealing areas etc.

just a thought to pass along

Here we go again, in 2009 and 2010 I replaced head gaskets on this Z24 twice with approx. 200 to 400 hours on it. In 2011 had engine rebuilt and lasted till 2012 with 300 hrs. Sent eng back to rebuilders and checked it over and replaced cylinder head. Now 2013 and 400 hrs gasket blown again, sent back to rebuilders and same problem. All checks out with set and advance timing, correct plugs and OE gaskets, new head bolts and retorqued.
Am I missing something or is this a common issue with the Z24 engines ?

Yes the intake has coolant passages to the mating surfaces of the head. I was concerned of excessive ign temp in combustion area causing scuffing/premature wear of valve stems in guide( very noticeable) and head gasket problems. I will double check surfaces with feeler gauge.
Thanks for all the input

If it is trying to blow between the #2 and #3 cylinders I would make sure head is flat again. One good overheat will warp it. Maybe clean the head and block, set the head on without a gasket, and see if you can slide a.003 feeler gauge in along the side of the head, in the middle. If it is blowing the gasket where the combustion is being sealed then that's where the coolant is getting in and I don't think the manifold is the problem.

Does the Intake Manifold have coolant ports???. We had an issue with a cracked Manifold and/or poor Manifold gaskets

I`v noticed that the coolant passage enters the intake manifold from cyl head at#1 cyl, these passages follow each intake runner to each cylinder but are no connecting ports on the head side( dead ends) is this standard or could the cyl head or intake be wrong possibly causing hot spots in the top end.

Just a thought, the automotive Z24 and industrial Z24 are not identical. Try getting oem gaskets from a Nissan forklift dealer. There may be subtle differences like coolant passageways that are the source of the problem. I would get new head bolts too. Also, how is the intake manifold gasket? All the high hour Z24s that I've come across had intake manifold gasket leaks, but I don't see how that would lead to your problem.
