Cat Lift Trucks (& Caterpillar) GP30N:
GP 30 mitsubishi 4g64

I have been fighting this machine about a month. the oil pump sprocket wore out and the timing belt slipped one tooth. removed and replace the belt, following the manual. remove and replace the plugs and wires.started and ran some what good. it seemed to be alittle fast on the timing. adjusted no help, but it ran!
a week later the machine stopped running. No spark. checked wiring to the coil. I have battery voltage. no plug spark. it was less expensive to replace the distributor than rebuild it. so I replaced the distributor. still no spark at plugs but the coil bit me so I know it was working. later while trouble shooting I found no spark at the coil. checked fuses, checked wiring, voltage to coil is present.
ordered up a new coil. new coil came with new wiring. installed coil and wiring. no spark.
the old harness wiring went from the ignition to the coil, comes out the coil and goes to the distributor, come out of the distributor and goes back to the ignition wire????.
yes it was running with that wiring.
I have tried repeatedly to get a schematic for the local vendor to no avail.
I have heard these machines have ignition problems.

can the air gap on the igniter be off?
is there a way to check the "pick up" to the igniter

Check if you have +12 volts at the coil and the one wire that goes to the distributor with the key on.

PS Are you sure the timing belt doesn't have a problem? Is the distributor turning ok?

Sounds like the igniter (pick-up) in the distributor is bad. The piece under the rotor is the signal rotor (4 sided piece) and triggers the igniter to open the circuit to the coil to fire the spark. That has the hot wire from key and a wire to the coil on it. The coil has a hot wire from the key and the wire from the igniter connected to it, like you said your's is wired. See if the coil sparks by just turning the key on and off. If it does it proves your coil and the wiring are ok. Then, if it doesn't spark while the distributor is cranking and turning I would say that igniter is bad in the distributor. part # 1017045
