Discussion:
Engine Stumbles and Stalls Intermittenly

I have a customer with a Hyster H80XM, Serial# L005V02859B. Has 4.3 GM V6. Unit runs on LPG. The unit while idling will drop to around 200-300 rpms then stall. Will start right back up every time and run fine. Check engine light comes and goes. I shorted A and D terminals on diagnostic plug and found codes 166 and 244. I believe I found what the 244 code is, Adaptive Learn Low LPG. The code list I have does not show a 166. I am hoping someone can help me with these codes. I can go from there. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

i am having trouble finding the diagnostic connector on a similar unit, i was told it should be on the left hand side of the steering wheel. the whole dash is removed and the only connector i can find does not match the wiring diagram, any thoughts?

Cleaned entire fuel system. Customer has low grade fuel. Extreme tar and wax build up in fuel system. Lift seems to be doing fine at the moment. Explained to the customer what I found. Suggested upgrading to HD-5 or HD-10. Thanks Swoop for your help.

DTC 244 - Adaptive Learn Low (LPG)
Circuit Description
The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) is used to determine if the fuel flow to the engine is correct by measuring the oxygen content in the exhaust gas. The ECM uses this information to correct the fuel flow with the closed loop multiplier and adaptive multiplier.

This fault will set if the adaptive multiplier exceeds the limits of normal operation.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
- Heated oxygen sensor.
- Check condition - engine running.
- Fault condition - adaptive multiplier out of range (at limit of -30 percent).
- MIL - on during active fault.

Diagnostic Aids
Always diagnose any other ECM codes that are present before beginning this diagnostic procedure.

Fuel system - high secondary fuel pressure will cause the system to run rich. A worn fuel mixer, faulty pressure trim valve (PTV) or fuel trim valve (FTV) can also cause the system to run rich.
Fuel quality - a drastic variation in fuel quality (very high butane content) may cause the system to run rich. Be sure that the specified HD- 5 or HD-10 motor fuel grade propane is used.

I think i would try cleaning the mixer and draining regulator first
it would help if you had the pc program so you could monitor the O2 sensor and fuel pressure etc.
But all in all if your cleaning doesn't improve things it may be the O2 sensor. (just guessing of course)

thats because the code 166 is a normal response from the ECM
it will display the 166 code 3 times at first indicating that the ECM based diagnostic routines are functioning.

Then after this the DTC error code will be displayed
