Discussion:
Dumb Question: Can you use shore power / Inverter with Forklift?

We have a client that has procured an older forklift (sorry I do not know the exact model yet). It seems that some of the batteries may be a little shot. Question I'm wondering is if you can use a fairly large inverter to run some (most/all?) forklifts off of DC. It seems like there should be some way to "plug them in", in the event of a battery failure. I could be way off base.

with the kind of inverter you would need to move the machine and lift
it would be less expensive to just replace the battery

also if it is a sitdown or standup forklift it should have one very large battery(2-3000 lbs or more)
if youre referring to the individual cells they combine together to make one battery
changing these one at a time would put added stress on the rest of the old cells and cause them to fail rapidly

by the time youre done with all the old cells (swapping them out) the 1st ones you replaced will most likely now be damaged

also you could expect to pay twice as much as a replacement by piecing it together like that

only pallet jacks would come with multiple batteries (four six volt golf cart batteries)

never swap cells unless the battery is new and under warranty

also dragging a 240v or 460v cable behind the machine would definitely be cause for concern in itself
such as a short circuit fire hazard by dragging the cable or getting it snagged on something or someone

and before you say "theyre careful its not a concern" i just like to say what i tell all my customers with Mcguyver ideas
"thats why they call them accidents not purposes"

but with a modification like this
YOU WOULD BE HELD SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LIABLE IF SOMETHING HAPPENED
as the technical advisor to them or the mechanic preforming the install you can be held liable if something BAD happened as a result of your work separately from your company (if youre not self employed) (IE they name both you and your company separately in the lawsuit)
recommend against it

New York, New York its a heluva town..you know that The Bronx is up..and I'm Brooklyn down
Thanks for this reply! I am also a North Carolinian of origin :) The batteries are apparently physical present, just not working. I don't think the idea was to remove them. In your analogy that would cause a sort of "right to life" issue, which apparently should be avoided because the weight offsets things ;)

I wonder if anyone knows of where you might find a 36v inverter. Are these common. Obviously, 12v Inverters are very common. I imagine 24v might even be somewhat common... but, I have a feeling this lift is 48v or 36v. I'm trying to drag more specs out of them.

"some of the batteries may be a little shot"?
is that like being a little pregnant? either the battery's cells are good or are bad.
the battery is the counterweight and the forklift NEEDS the weight for offsetting the weight of the lift.
also, a forklift lifting a capacity load will use almost 500 amps and what ever is the normal battery's voltage, so a 36 volt forklift would need an inverter/transformer of 36vX500amp=18000 watt inverter.
but any DC power supply of the correct voltage and enough amperage could be made to work. especially for the drive function since it does not require the counter weight of the battery to operate.
