Cat Lift Trucks (& Caterpillar) FC40:
Cuts off on right steer

I have to go on a call tomorrow on an FC40 three wheel Cat electric (5EB) and I don't have any service information for it. Customer says that it cuts out on a right hand turn (any angle) and to get it operational he has to reset via the key switch. After resetting it may steer to the right a few degrees or do a full turn before cutting out again. I don't see why the degree sense on the steering spindle would cause it to cut out or maybe there are other symptoms that I have not been told about. Any help would be appreciated.

Showing items 1 - 4 of 4 results.
I didn't make it there today (other issues). I called and asked if the chart was under the hood, he said it was but pretty much unreadable. Also asked if any codes were showing and I believe he said a backwards "3", maybe an "8" with a segment out ? Didn't make any sense to me but then again who knows. The assistance that you mentioned would be much appreciated, thank you.

well after looking in the MCF Parts Client they only show one model range for this particular truck but it is almost exactly the same as the other F Series 3 wheeled models using the micro command system.

First i would make sure the battery charge is good
then when that is ok run the self diagnostic test
There should be a diagram pasted under the hood and it will have a diagram layout of the control panel components on it and on one side it will show you the self diagnostic chart and what each step does and the result.
If you need assistance in doing this let me know and i can tell you how to do it.
The onboard diagnostic will test all the functions and switches and also will test the contactors on the control panel.
I suspect you may have one either not working or the tips or plunger armature are worn.

Let me ask this also, what does the display show you when the steer cuts out?
Normally it will display a number for what the battery charge is from 0 to 9 but when it codes out that will change to a different number or letter when the error occurs.

Thanks for the reply. He could only read the first couple numbers of the serial. He said it was five numbers with the first two being 03 he thought the third may be a 2. Sorry I can't be more specific.

a full serial number would be more helpful

my first guess though would be a bad steering sensor
